2010 Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 vs. Ducati Hypermotard 796 |

What's a modern supermotard supposed to look and act like these days?
The supermoto era began with converted motocross bikes. Suspension is reworked with decreased travel for improved handling on pavement and less dive under braking. Large-diameter dirtbike wheels are swapped out for 17-inchers that allow a broad range of sportbike rubber to choose from. And the front brake is upgraded with a brawnier set-up that includes a larger rotor to handle deceleration from higher speeds.
Wham-o! That's it in a flash. From high-flying motocrosser to a pavement eating … er, high-flyer, too, if the rider so wishes. A converted MXer is a riot on a canyon road, but it's incredibly ill-suited to the freeway drones on the way to the twisties.
More recently, however, manufacturers have issued... [Read More]

2010 Literbike Shootout: RSV4 R vs S1000RR vs CBR1000RR vs ZX-10R |
|
Apr 06, 2010 - 10:53 AM - by administrator
|
The performance of modern literbikes may be intoxicatingly fabulous, but we were becoming a little bored in recent shootouts by having to resort to splitting hairs among the Big Four's similarly spec'd 1000cc sportbikes. Yamaha gave us a taste of something different last year with the crossplane-crankshaft version of the R1, but it has a small power number and a large weight number, so it wasn't the game-changer we hoped would shake up the literbike pecking order. We began to feel a yawn coming on.
And that's why we're glad 2010 has rolled around, as it sees the introduction of two totally new four-cylinder superbike contenders. Aprilia comes to the party with the first liter-sized V-Four sportbike, while the tech-heavy Germans at BMW present the most powerful production literbike ever, the S1000RR.
At the... [Read More]

2010 Literbike Shootout: Aprilia RSV4 Factory vs. Ducati 1198S vs. KTM RC8R |
|
Jan 04, 2010 - 9:37 AM - by administrator
|
Another year, a bigger battle.
With BMW's S1000RR and KTM's updated and new-to-the-U.S. RC8R as an all-new model, the field of liter-ish superbikes expands considerably for 2010.
Apologies to MV Agusta for not counting the 2010 F4, but no one's yet signed up to race it in a large-scale series – the KTM was the runner-up in the 2009 IDM (International German Superbike Championship). We sure wouldn't mind a spin on the MV, though. (Hint, hint, MV Agusta.)
Like the race grid, we'll now expand the roster of contestants in our annual liter test.
No longer limiting the battle to the Big Four from Japan, we'll eventually include the BMW S1000RR on the list of participants powered by the popular inline-Four configuration. But for now, to start off what has become a literbike mêlée,... [Read More]

2010 Aprilia RSV4 Factory Review |
|
Dec 11, 2009 - 12:20 PM - by administrator

Every couple of years or so a bike manufacturer will come up with a machine that rattles opponent's cages and gets sportbike fans in a buying – or dreaming of buying – frenzy.
Remember the excitement over the first generation Yamaha R6 and R1? And just this year Yamaha got mouths salivating again with an all-new R1 and its MotoGP-derived cross-plane crank.
With icons such as the 916, the Monster line, and more recently the 1098 and 1198 superbikes, Ducati has a history of generating bike envy amongst enthusiast friends, while at the same time confounding competitors.
BMW has been in the moto media spotlight since announcing the S1000RR way back in April 2008. Kevin "Frequent Flyer Miles" Duke recently rode the new Beemer in Portimao, Portugal, and came away highly impressed with the... [Read More]

While we enjoy ripping on substandard motorcycles, crappy bikes are hard to find these days. Take a look at any of our comparison tests from the last couple of years and you'll find only marginal differences between our declared winners and their competitors.
With so much high-quality product to choose from, culling the field down into our Best Of winners was an arduous task. But that didn't stop us from coming up with our favorite stuff from the class of '09! Introducing the first-annual Motorcycle.com Best Of awards. And the MoBo goes to...
