It's a bit hard to know what's wrong exactly without looking at it, I'd take it to a local mechanic let him have a look and see what he thinks.. He shouldn't charge you for having a look. Just ask him for a quote to fix it, if he thinks your going to spend money with him he's more likely to look at it for free for you, and see what he says. I used to be a mechanic and wouldn't have a problem looking at somebody's bike for them for free but some meaner mechanics out there might.
Also points worth making.....if you are going to pay somebody to fix it I'd get at least 2-3 quotes for the work so you kiow where you are with it. Also the cheapest mechanic is rarely the best!
